The loss of lives in Charleston is heartbreaking. The murder of nine peaceful people by a racist young man is horrendous. The fact that this could happen anywhere in America is extraordinarily disturbing. On Wednesday, it was Charleston. How extremely saddening and angering it is to know that tomorrow it could be another city.
Racism is learned. Teaching tolerance and practicing acceptance must be generational. Charleston is hurting. Living here and watching this unfold is heartbreaking. Until there is acceptance, until everyone teaches that there can be no place for racism in our country there will be other cities, other people, feeling the same pain. We have to change and that change begins with teaching our children to embrace differences, teaching them to love instead of hate. We should all do everything we can to ensure we bring an end to generational racism.
The fact that this horrific, racist killing took place in a house of worship that has historical significance in the civil rights movement is stunning, but to me, the fact that a twenty-one year old white supremacist killed nine innocent people on the sole basis of their race is the true horror, regardless of the location.
I’ve read and heard a lot of talk about healing. While healing is imperative, until hearts and minds are changed, the healing is never ending. Teaching love, acceptance and respect is what must take place in order to effect real, meaningful change.
I cannot begin to comprehend the emotions of those who were close to these victims. I cannot understand what it’s like to encounter the blunt, blatant racism that is encountered so often. What I can understand is that we must stop talking about equality for all and take action to make that more than just a catch phrase.
Teach love, practice love. We like to think that in America we can do better. I believe we can, I question when we will.
