I was happy when I found an outline map of the US at my local Goodwill. I loved that it was wood and could be transformed to use outdoors.
USA Lawn Sign for the 4th of July
The map was in rough condition when I spotted it, but I knew that it could be given a makeover pretty easily. It obviously had something else attached to it that someone had tried to remove. I guess they gave up and decided to donate it. That’s a win for me!
I used my palm sander to remove the pieces that had been left behind and to smooth out the entire map before painting.
After wiping it off with a lint free cloth, I gave it two coats of blue spray paint, allowing for drying time between each coat. It was already looking much better!
While the paint was drying, I used my Cricut Design Space to create a design for the map. I searched images for “equality” and found one that I loved. For the words “FOR ALL,” I used a font called Star Studded. I also inserted a basic star image into the project and used the duplicate tool to add more of them.
After resizing the graphic to fit the map, the images were cut and weeded and I tested out placement for them on the sign.
Using an image and a different font for the words makes them both pop so that it can be easily read from the street after being placed on our lawn. I added stars randomly to fill the blank spaces.
In order to make this a lawn sign, I needed to add a stake. I happened to have one left over from some project from long ago. Using a cordless screwdriver and small screws, I attached the stake to the back of the sign.
The phrase I used is one that brings to mind the reason why we celebrate the 4th of July. We aren’t there yet, but we have to keep striving for a time when there is true equality for all in our country.
The final step was to add a couple of coats of protective finish. I used DecoArt DuraClear, but a spray finish would work, too. I moved it around in the lawn until I was happy with the placement.
The thrift store price for this was $2.99 and I had all of the other supplies I needed on hand, so this was a very budget friendly 4th of July decor piece. You can find a link to an unfinished USA map in the related products section at the end of this post.
