This indoor planter was given to me a while ago and while I liked the shape of it, I didn’t like its red color. I’ve given it an updated look to fit in with my decor using spray chalk paint.

My brother has lots of red in his home and also lots of plants and flowers. While he definitely has a green thumb, my luck with flowers and plants is more along the lines of “I sure hope this doesn’t die!” That’s why I’ve opted to use faux flowers for the planter.
Update an Old Planter with Spray Chalk Paint
Changing the look of the planter was as simple as painting it white and adding a decorative stencil to it.

- Stencil
- Paint and craft brush for stencil
- Vase Filler (I used an old towel)

I used the planter during the holidays last year as it was. The deep red fit in well with my decor, but since then it’s been taking up space in my storage room.
To cover the red, I first gave it two coats of ivory chalk paint. This works well as a base coat.
Since I had such good luck using Kilz Chalk Spray Paint on a flatware chest makeover, I thought I’d give it a try on the planter. It worked great and the surface has a nice smooth finish to it.
Once the paint was completely dry, I used an adhesive stencil to add a little decoration to the planter. I painted one on the front and back of the planter using Waverly Chalk Paint in Agave. After that was dry, I gave the planter a coat of Minwax Polycrylic Protective Spray Finish.
To create an appropriate depth for the flowers, I added a glass cylinder vase to the planter. I tried out several vases that I had on hand until I found one that was just the right size to fit into the planter without sliding down. This one is from Dollar Tree.
I added floral foam pieces to the vase and inserted the flowers. I had these on hand, but I can easily change out the flowers seasonally. Plus, since I used the vase inside of the planter, I could add water and place fresh cut flowers in it, too.
Now that it’s no longer red, the updated planter fits in nicely in our parlor. With the white flowers it’s a great piece for summer decor. I’m already planning on changing out the flowers for fall.
I recommend using Kilz spray chalk paint to easily give a fresh new look to any decor piece. What’s your latest makeover?
