Upcycle projects are always some of my favorites. Finding ways to use inexpensive items from thrift stores is both fun and challenging. This upcycled thread rack into an earring holder was an easy project for the craft room destash challenge this month!
It’s time for the monthly Craft DeStash Challenge Hop!
Every month a group of bloggers are challenged by C’mon Get Crafty to create a new craft or project from their own stash of goodies! Everyone is allowed a $10 allowance for necessities to complete their project (i.e. paint brushes, glue, etc), but the bulk of it must be created from their own stash of goodies.
Let’s meet this month’s bloggers!!

How to Make an Earring Holder from a Thread Rack
Supplies Used:
- Thread Rack
- White Chalk Paint
- Peach Paint
- Brushes
- Decorative Tape
- Spray Protective Finish
I found this thread rack at my local Goodwill last year. Since I don’t sew, I don’t have spools of thread for it, but I thought it might work to hold loose ribbon. It didn’t work well for that, so I put it away and didn’t give it any more thought until recently as I was sorting through my craft stash. My husband happened to be in the room with me when I pulled it out. I mentioned that I didn’t know what I was going to do with it. His reply: “Looks like it would hold jewelry.” Ah! Of course it does! So, the credit for this upcycle goes to Dave! I paid $1.99 for it and I’ve seen these at JoAnn Fabric and Craft for $9.99, so it was a good buy at Goodwill.
It didn’t appear as though the rack had ever been used. I wiped it off with a cloth just to make sure any dust was gone. I gave it two coats of Waverly Chalk Paint in Ivory, allowing it to dry between each coat. I already had this paint in my craft stash. Once it was dry, I sprayed it with MinWax Polycrylic Finish.
I looked through my assortment of decorative tape and found this copper colored tape with a diamond pattern. I added two strips to each rung of the rack and also along the outer wood pieces. I painted the tips of each post with Apple Barrel Sunkissed Peach Acrylic Paint.
Since I’m using this on my Peach Painted Vanity, the copper tape and the peach painted tips work with the vanity color.
I have a lot of earrings and my rotating earring stand is full. Adding another earring holder lets me keep them in an easy to access spot. Finding a practical use for this Goodwill find and clearing out a spot in my craft stash was great!
It’s great to find ways to use items in my craft stash. For this project, I didn’t purchase anything new, so that’s always a bonus!

What a great way to display your earrings! I always forget to put some in because they are put away in drawers. This display would certainly help!

The copper tape really enhances the sparkly effect with the jewelry. The rack gorgeously displays all your pretty earrings, and I’m sure it’s helpful for quick access. I store most of my earrings in a clear box that has dividers, but most of mine are small to medium in size. Pinning!
Beverly says
I like the copper tape, too. Thank you, Kristin. It is coming in handy to have them close at hand. Thanks for pinning!
Julie Briones says
Such a smart idea, Beverly! Love the washi tape accents, too! Could you hang this on a wall, as well, to save counter space? Thanks for sharing at Homestyle Gathering! Pinned!
Beverly says
Thanks! Washi Tape is such an easy way to add accents. It could probably be placed on a wall since the legs fold down to make it flat, but I’m not sure that it would look very good that way. Thanks for the party, Julie!
Erlene says
Ahh…this is perfect for jewelry and it definitely was a great buy.
Beverly says

Alexandra says
What an excellent idea! I have seen quite a few of those, and while I do sew, I don’t have a collection big enough (or need as I don’t sew that much) for one, but I love that you turned it into a jewelry holder! Gives it a completely different look, and matches so well with your other piece. Going to have to keep my eye out for a sale, or hopefully, a thrift store find.
Beverly says
Thanks, Alexandra! I was happy to have found a way to use it that works for me. Finding it at a thrift store made it even better!
