Charleston Room Makeover On a Budget Series
My latest thrift store find makeover is this cute, little curio shelf. When I saw it, I knew that it could be a perfect display shelf for a few pieces of my milk glass collection. Priced at $2.00, it was just right.
The first thing I did was to clean it using TSP. It was very sturdy and didn’t need any repairs. That’s always a win!
I gave it one coat of DIY Chalk paint using the same recipe from 2 Bees in a Pod that I used for this display shelf and allowed it to dry. I mixed Plaster of Paris with water and then added White Paint. I wasn’t sold on leaving this piece white though.
I decided that I wanted the piece to have some color, so I mixed in some leftover Valspar Pale Pasture paint to my mixture DIY mixture. This gave it a nice, soft green color. I gave it two coats of this.
I roughed up the edges with sand paper just a little, letting some of the original finish show through here and there.
Then came the fun part! Choosing which pieces of milk glass look best took a few different tries. After placing and replacing a few times, I was pleased with this look.
I have the larger pieces of milk glass in an open display cabinet and I thought of leaving the curio sitting on top of it, but decided that didn’t look quite right.
The curio had wall mounting hooks already attached. It’s hanging on the wall above the display cabinet. I think the soft green goes well with the color of the wall, which is a shade of peach.
My next project for this room is to redo the open cabinet below to match the curio.
$2.00 plus supplies I already had isn’t bad at all! My goal is to refresh all of the furniture in this room. Currently, it’s all dark wood and I want to give the entire room a much needed update. I started off with something easy!

I’m so amazed sometimes how just a coat of paint can transform a piece from just okay to spectacular! Love the green color and it looks wonderful with the milk glass!! Looking forward to seeing your room transform!

I agree with you. A new paint job goes a long way in taking something from blah to pretty. Thanks, Laurie. This room is going to be my summer project. I got the DIY curtain rods up last year and then kind of stalled. But, I’m ready to tackle it!
