It’s time for our Monthly Craft Room De-Stash Challenge Hop. Each month, a group of bloggers meet the challenge from C’Mon Get Crafty to use items from our own stash to create a craft or project.

We can spend ten dollars for necessary supplies to create it, but most need to be things we already have. Be sure to check out all of the links at the bottom of the post for some great ideas!

Dollar Store Stenciled Floor Mat

I bought this simple mat at Dollar Tree last year with the intention of using it for a holiday craft. That didn’t happen, so it was still in my craft stash, waiting for its turn!

Deciding on just what to do with it might have taken me longer than actually doing it! I finally decided to make it a spring craft, so I searched through my stencils. I found a cute bird and flower stencil.

Since the mat has ridges on it, I knew that the paint wouldn’t look very smooth, but since I only paid $1.00 for the mat, I was okay with that. I chose a couple of DecoArt paints and some spouncers from my paint supply bins.

To keep the stencil in place while I painted, I sprayed the back of it lightly with spray adhesive.

Since the texture of the mat is rough, some of the paint went on in splotches. The small dot from the stencil were especially not good. After I removed the stencil, I used the spouncer to make them a little bigger. It’s still not great, but since this is a floor mat, I was okay with it. The painted bird is much better than the branches.

To protect the paint, I added DecoArt DuraClear Varnish. I know that this mat isn’t likely to hold up too well over time, but it’s a fun and very cheap addition to my spring decor.

The stenciled mat is being used just inside the door that leads onto our deck from our sun room.

After I finished the bird stencil, I decided to add a few flowers to the bottom of the mat. I found a small flower stencil in my craft stash, to use.

I have been wanting to try stenciling a floor mat. Great tutorial and destash! Thanks for sharing
Beverly says
Thanks, Chas. I’d look for one that has a smooth surface to get the paint to go on more evenly.

I used a floor mat like this when I was in high school or college to make a mat for my grandmother one Christmas and while I agree that the texture can make it hard to get a good crisp stencil line I also agree that it does work out good enough for a floor mat. Yours is beautiful!

If I did another one, I’d try to find one that is smooth. Thank you, Joanne!

What a great idea! Have you noticed any issues with the painting wearing off easily, or does it stay pretty well?
Beverly says
Thanks! I just finished this a week or so ago, so it’s too soon to tell yet. But, I’m hoping that the DuraClear Varnish will protect it. It’s place near a door that we don’t use a lot, so that will help, too. Since the mat was only $1.00, if it holds up over spring, I’ll be happy.

Such a great idea! I really like the paint colors you chose. I’m pinning this idea for later. I definitely need a couple cute rugs.
