We’ve got another thrift store find makeover to share today. I found two chargers at Goodwill recently for $1.99 for both. That was a good price and I knew I could use them both for a couple of projects I had in mind. One of them got a patriotic makeover. This Stars & Stripes Chalk Painted Charger was a simple makeover that turned out great for a piece of patriotic decor.
I knew that I wouldn’t use a set of two burgundy chargers, so giving them both makeovers was a great option. One of them is going to get a coastal makeover, but the first one is now displayed along with other patriotic decor.
I began by taping off sections of the chargers. I got a little ahead of myself and didn’t take a photo until I after I had started painting the blue section.
I used Waverly Chalk paint in blue, red, and white. For the blue section, I used the same Ocean paint that I used for my coastal candle holder. The red stripes are painted with Lacquer and the white ones are done in Plaster. After I took the tape off, I saw that it needed another coat of paint. I wasn’t worried about having precise lines because I planned on adding ribbon between the stripes.
After taping it again, I gave it another coat and it was ready for the ribbon. The burlap ribbon was too wide, but I folded it in half and glued it together to narrow it.
White foam stars are added to the top and silver starfish are glued below. I used a total of 13 stars in reference to the 13 original colonies. I used tweezers to pull away the excess glue.
I alternated star ribbon with burlap ribbon to divide the stripes. Small dots of hot glue hold the ribbon in place.
I love how it turned out! The colors are are muted enough to blend in well enough with my coastal decor and the starfish stars are just right.
It’s nested on my lighthouse display cabinet.
I already had the paint, ribbon, stars, and starfish, so the only new cost was $1.99 for the two chargers. It’s easy to give a thrift store item a new look with some paint and a few embellishments.

Adorable, looks so nice on light house shelf with light houses on either side. Did a great job on that charger, love how you alternated star ribbon with burlap ribbon, different look and idea but great execution.
Love the star ribbon, any idea where I might find some? Thought at first was star tape til I read further.
Wonderful idea for patriotic decorations for $1.99.
Enjoy rest of weekend
