Gloria has been decorating cakes for years. She’s got way more talent than I do. I like to bake, she likes to decorate. So, it works out well! This Stars and Stripes Cake is one that she made for our 4th of July party a number of years ago. It looks great, but she says it wasn’t difficult to create.
If you follow our blog, you’ve seen photos of Gloria. This one is from years ago when she made this fun cake. We can’t recall the exact year that she made this cake, but it was probably about ten years ago which would make her a teenager. It also means it was well before we started the blog, so we don’t have step by step photos of the cake decorating.
The cake was a basic chocolate cake mix-this one’s about the decorating, not the baking! She used 2 boxes of mix. Two layers were baked in eight inch pans and two were in four inch pans.
The frosting is a double batch of our cream cheese frosting recipe, divided for coloring. Using gel dyes gives a vibrant blue and red.
The two smaller layers were stacked on top of the larger ones. Each layer was given a crumb coat of frosting and placed in the refrigerator for about 10 minutes.
The bottom layers are filled with stars, alternating the white and red frosting.
She used sing a star shaped cookie cutter pressed gently into the cake to mark the spots for the white stars. Using a small star tip, she added the blue stars to the top layers around the cookie cutter. Then the star cutouts were filled in with white frosting using the same tip. White stars circle the area between the layers.
Using some fun picks we found at Party City adds a little more pop to the cake.
This Stars and Stripes Cake is a great centerpiece for a July 4th party table.
While it did take a while for Gloria to fill in the entire cake with stars, the result is worth the time!
I always enjoy Gloria’s cake creations. I think I need to ask her to make a fun patriotic cake for this year’s July 4th party.
