While I love our American red, white and blue, those colors don’t flow well with the decor in my home. I wanted something to blend in while at the same time giving a nod to patriotism I’ve seen various decor pieces using the phrase Sea to Shining Sea and I thought that would be perfect for what I had in mind. Let me show you how I turned a thrift store plaque into the Patriotic Coastal Decor.
A while ago I purchased two similar plaques from Goodwill. I used one of them to make my Coastal Key Holder. . The second one came in handy for this patriotic project.
I began by removing the knobs and cleaning the plaque with TSP. The coffee cup pictures were paper that had been glued onto the plaque. I tried to tear them off, but that made a mess, so I sanded over them.
I’d love to say that I used some proper painting technique for this, but sadly, my painting skills aren’t that great. I simply used a combination of paint colors, applied in various spots on the plaque.
After applying paint, I used a cheese cloth to wipe off the excess and to blend it in. I used a lot of circular motions to give the feel of waves. Given that my painting skills are what they are, I was going for coloring that would give the impression of the sea. I’d love to be able to actually paint a seascape, but this works for me! I added darker blue paint for the area that would be the horizon and a combination of dark blue, teal and white for the sky area.
I hot glued a starfish to the left corner.
I found these small starfish charms at Michaels in the jewelry craft section. I removed the loop with wire cutters and hot glued them to the plaque.
I wasn’t sure how I was going to put the phrase on the plaque. I tried some white wood chip letters, but I didn’t like how squared they were. Now would have been a great time to have a Silhouette! I’m thinking that might make a wonderful birthday gift later this summer! For now, I just relied on my own handwriting. I used a white paint marker to write the phrase.
I added some sea shells around it for display.
I love that it flows with my other coastal decor on my mantel.
Considering this was a project that was a whole of just “try it and see” I’m pretty please with it!
