I love adding red, white, and blue to my summer decor, but I also love finding ways to incorporate our patriotic colors with my coastal decor. As I was planning my breakfast nook summer tablescape, I knew I needed some new coasters. I was lucky to have found a set still in the original box during a recent trip to Goodwill. Priced at $2.00, they came home with me and were given a patriotic makeover.
I don’t think these coasters had ever been used, making this a great little find. While they aren’t my taste, a little paint would have them fitting into my decor in no time. I already had the paint and the stencil, keeping the cost for these Patriotic Starfish Coasters low.
Using Lacquer Waverly Chalk Paint, I gave them each two coats, allowing them to dry between coats.
To give the coasters a bit of a coastal look, I used a starfish stencil. I painted the starfish with Plaster Waverly Chalk Paint.
I bought a small roll of patriotic washi tape recently. I wasn’t sure how I would use it, but I knew it would come in handy for some of my patriotic projects this summer. To add more of a patriotic look, I added a strip of the tape along the bottom of each coaster.
I used a small piece of fine grit sand paper to smooth out the starfish. Just a light touch was all they needed.
The final step was to give them three coats of Minwax Polycrylic Protective Finish Spray. I used this on a set of coastal coasters I made a couple of years ago and they have held up well. These turned out just the way I wanted them to. The imperfections in the starfish are okay with me!
This was definitely a budget friendly and easy project! Now, I just need Gloria to stop by and create one of her delicious cocktails!
I think these will be a great addition to my Red, White, and Blue tablescape. I’ll be sharing it soon. They are so easy and quick to make, they would be a fun hostess gift for those summer parties you’ll be going to.

I love how you finished the coasters you found at Goodwill! The transformation is amazing! Never would have thought it’s the same set. And it goes perfectly with any patriotic or nautical look! Well done, Beverly!
Beverly says
Thanks, Gail! I love what a little paint can do! It’s fun trying to find ways to have both a patriotic look and a coastal look.
Laurie says
Beverly, These are so cute! The imperfections in the starfish is what makes these so perfect! The patriotic washi tape adds just the right patriotic touch that is not overdone. Love how they turned out! Great project! Pinned and shared!
Beverly says
Thanks, Laurie! I think I need a better stencil to have all of the starfish look identical. After a couple of uses, the cardboard stencil didn’t want to cooperate! So, I decided to just accept the imperfections! 🙂 Thanks for sharing!
