Since this is a piece that needs to hold up under both bright sunshine and possibly rain, I needed to use outdoor paints. DecoArt has a great selection from their Outdoor Living line. For my lawn decor sign, I used Ladybug, Morning Glory, and Picket Fence. I also protected the piece with DecoArt DuraClear Gloss Varnish.
My local Goodwill always has an assortment of wall art that is priced low. I bought this floral piece a couple of months ago and it’s just the right size for what I had in mind for my patriotic lawn decor.
After cleaning away any dust or particles, the floral piece got two coats of white paint, allowing for each to dry. Once the second coat was dry, I covered it with the clear varnish to protect it.
While the varnish was drying, I painted USA letters with Ladybug paint. Each letter got two coats plus the varnish. Here’s where I should mention that if you want to give the piece a bit of a distressed look, which I did, you should do so before attaching the letters. Can you guess how I know this? Since I got ahead of myself on this one, I used a small piece of medium grit sand paper to distress the edges of the sign and the USA letters. Then, I had to blow all of the sanded particles away.
Since this is an outdoor piece, I made sure to use a waterproof wood glue to attach the letters.
I love this DecoArt stencil, but for this project, all I wanted to use was the wavy flag portion of it. I used painter’s tape to hold the stencil in place while adding paint.
After the paint for the flag was dry, I covered it with clear varnish and began adding on the embellishments for the sign. I have an assortment of stars in my craft stash and all they needed was a quick paint job to match the paint colors I used for the letters and flag.
Using my Cricut Air Explore 2, I designed, cut, and weeded “1776” in red vinyl and attached it to the bottom center.
I thought of a couple of different ways to make the sign a stand alone piece for the yard. I could have used dowels or scrap wood pieces angled for support, and attached to the back. But, when I spotted several scrap pieces of what had been 2×4 planks, I decided to make a base for the sign that would support it and add more decorative features. The longer piece of wood was painted and varnished. To provide support for the back of the sign, I glued a smaller piece of wood to the center of the longer piece. I left it clamped in place overnight.
Small wood stars, painted white and red, line the front of the board. In keeping with the Americana theme I’m using this year, there are 13 stars to go along with the vinyl 1776 design.
The final step was to glue the base to the sign.
My patriotic lawn decor sign goes great with the DIY No Sew Lawn Flags that I put together. I added a couple of small pails, filled with rocks and mini US flags on both sides of the sign base. We’ll enjoy this red, white, and blue lawn display this summer.

Great sign to welcome family and guests. 4th of July seems to get overlooked as a holiday to decorate your home. THIS is a nice idea.
