Putting together a tablescape can be expensive, but to keep the cost low I always like to make some of the decor pieces myself. These fabric covered lemon coasters are an easy DIY project.
DIY Lemon Coasters from Dollar Tree Items
I found these round discs at Dollar Tree earlier this year. There is a hole in the top and it came with a small coil of plastic wire attached to the back that could be used for hanging. I bought several of them thinking they would make pretty coasters.
The more I looked at that hole, the less I wanted to use them as coasters. The solution was to cover the hole. When I decided to create a lemon themed table setting, I knew these discs could be turned into pretty lemon coasters. The first step was to paint each of the discs to cover the design.
I thought about using my Cricut to create a design, but when I spotted some fabric with lemon print at Walmart that’s the direction I decided to go in.
Place each disc onto the fabric and outline the circle with a pencil.
Using scissors or a rotary cutter, cut the circle.
Cover the disc with Mod Podge and smooth the fabric circle over the top. Trim away any excess fabric from the edges.
Add a coat of Mod Podge to the fabric. Allow this to dry completely. I left mine overnight to make sure it was set.
After the coasters are dry, use a small piece of medium grit sandpaper over the fabric edges and along the outer rim of the coaster. Wipe any residue away with a lint free cloth.
Apply two coats of DecoArt Dura Clear Varnish to each coaster to protect it from water damage. Allow the first coat to dry before adding the second.
I love how these turned out and I plan on making more with different fabric. I think a set of them for the 4th of July would be great. It’s on my to do list!
I’m enjoying putting together lots of lemon themed decor. For the Centerpiece, I also used some dollar store items. I’ll be sharing more lemon decor that is perfect for a spring or summer tablescape.
