It’s time to turn our attention to St. Patrick’s Day! If ever there was a holiday that comes around with a roar, it’s this one! What started off as a religious feast has been transformed into a day for celebrating all things Irish-or even things not so Irish-like green beer! It’s a fun day for many and a day that can be enjoyed by anyone-Irish or not.
The Irish culture is one that is warmly embraced in the US. Of course, that wasn’t always the case, but early Irish immigrants held true to their culture even after coming here. Celebrations for St. Patrick’s Day have grown into huge events in lots of US cities. One of the more endearing aspects of St. Patrick’s Day is the passing along of Irish Blessings. From whimsical to serious, we seem to all love them.
One of my favorites is “May your troubles be less, your blessings be more and nothing but happiness come through your door.” If you’ve followed my posts at all, you know that I love making simple wall hangings for any occasion. So, I decided to made a small one to place beside our front door using that blessing.

Wooden plaque
Twine
Laminated Burlap Sheet
Shamrocks
Ribbon
Hot Glue
I started with an old wooden plaque that I bought several years ago and have used for a variety of projects. This time, I painted it brown and then sanded it down to give it a rustic feel. Any piece of wood will work, but this one already has twine on hooks for hanging, so that’s one less step.
I printed the blessing on a laminated burlap sheet. If you’ve seen any of my wall hangings, you know that I love to print on laminated burlap. I’ve said before that I think those sheets are my favorite craft item ever! I trimmed it to size, letting some of the wood show and then hot glued it to the wood. I also made a bow out of twine and hot glued that to the bottom center.
I added a strip of green ribbon to the top and bottom of the burlap and wrapped it around to the back and glued it in place.
The shamrocks I bought were shiny and just didn’t have the right look for this.
So, I used a fine grit sand paper and took the shine off by roughing them up a little. Then I glued them to the wood.
I added another shamrock to the top of the hanging twine.
Making this wall hanging and adding a little Irish touch to my home for St. Patrick’s Day was easy.
I grew up thinking I did not have any Irish heritage in my family. It wasn’t until one of my cousins began searching our family genealogy that we discovered that our great great grandfather was an Irish immigrant to the US. Apparently, he was not the cream of the crop though. He moved from Georgia to Texas, leaving his family behind. His son, my great grandfather, was so angry over this, that he changed his name to his mother’s maiden name, thereby all but erasing the Irish name from our family’s history.
Regardless of the lack of moral character of this particular Irishman, I can now look at my husband and say, “Kiss Me, I’m Irish!”

Beverly, I love that quote and it is perfect for your cute wall hanging! I found that I also have just a little bit of Irish in my blood. I also love your mirrors – where did you get them?
Beverly Roderick says
Thank you, Laurie! It’s interesting to find out about things like that. I got the mirrors at Kirkland’s a couple of years ago. It’s a set of three. I looked around forever until I found what I wanted to put in that spot.

Another beautiful, thoughtful wall hanging! Love how you roughed up those shiny shamrocks to get the look you were going for!
Beverly Roderick says
How sweet, Renee. Thank you. Sometimes, shiny just isn’t the right look. The best idea I could come up with was sand paper! Thanks so much for coming by.
Kathleen says
I enjoyed reading the little history of St Patrick’s day. LOL I am married to a Patrick so it’s his day too. Your wall hanging is really attractive and would look good anywhere.
Beverly says
Thanks, Kathleen! Indeed, it is your husband’s day, too!
Darlene says
Hi Beverly, lots of people celebrate St. Patrick’s Day here too. (Southern Ontario) I haven’t – other than wear green into work. I don’t know why. Perhaps its because my Mom doesn’t or hasn’t. She is all Mohawk – no Irish there. And I’m pretty sure my Dad was just plain ole Hungarian.
Your wall hanging is simple and meaningful. I love the quote and the writing on the burlap. Way nice.
Beverly says
It’s always interesting to find out where and why people different regions celebrate. Thank you, Darlene. I love that quote, too.

I love this! I’ve never heard of a laminated burlap sheet before, so now I’m on the hunt for it!!
Beverly says
I found laminated burlap a couple of years ago and it changed the way I do so many projects. They go through my printer just like paper. I used a brand called Essentials found at lots of stores, but it’s cheapest at Walmart.

I had no idea you can dull out those 4 leaf clovers like that! I love this wall hanging it turned out great!
Beverly says
I didn’t know if it would work well, but it did the job and gave me the look I was after. Thank you, Jenny.
Beverly says
Thank you! There are so many wonderful Irish Blessings. Glad you like the idea!
Wendy says
I really like the decoration you made, especially the wood it is on. And I had no idea there was such a thing as laminated burlap that could go through a printer! I am going to find some of that! I have recently made a few things with burlap (I’m a little slow to this party 😉 ), and can see that it is very versatile. And as for St. Patrick’s Day, it has always been such a whirlwind season in our house! My daughter was an Irish dancer and she would often perform 10+ times per week from mid-February to late March. It gave a whole new meaning to “March Madness!” 🙂

Thank you, Wendy! Laminated Burlap is wonderful. I’ve used it for all kinds of projects. I can imagine how busy that would have kept your family.
