This over-sized bedroom hasn’t been used as a bedroom since Gloria graduated from college back in 2011. Since then, it’s been an upstairs den of sorts. It’s been in need of a true makeover all that time. This is the first in a few posts that I’ll be sharing on How to Makeover a Bedroom Into a Den.
This is what the room has been looking like for a few years now. It’s not very well designed and it needs a new color palette. The room is quite spacious and large enough to be used as a upstairs den. Changing the futon for a proper couch is on the list, but for now, the leather couch I want isn’t in the budget.
The walls were done using three shades of brown ranging from beige to tan to dark brown.
I love using Behr paint and I used the same color, Cosmic Quest, that I used for our home office/craft room last summer. It only took one coat to get great coverage for the walls.
One of our early blog posts was about how we converted the closet in the room into a display nook for my husband’s collectible airplanes. This was the first step in changing the bedroom into a den. We didn’t need the closet space, so removing the hanging bars and some wire shelves was a way to turn it into a usable space. Adding shelves to hold the planes is a much more practical use of the space for what we want the room to be. This is how it’s looked for the last few years.
This is what it looks like now. This is still part of the work that needs to be done in the room. I plan on painting the walls of the nook. I’m still trying to decide between painting them gray like the walls or white to match the shelves. I’m leaning towards white. I’m a little concerned that gray inside of the space will look dark and I’m trying to brighten up the room. I’d love your opinions!
We are fortunate to have this over-sized bedroom that we can use as an upstairs den. We’re adding some bookcases to hold lots of our sports memorabilia. I’m in the process of painting a tv console cabinet to go with the new look of the room. It is a work in progress!
