How to Make a Fall Basket Using Dollar Store Items
Supplies Used
-
- Basket
- Floral Stems
- Pumpkin Picks
- Scarecrow Picks
- Mini Hay Bale
- Small Pumpkins
- Ribbon
- Wooden Pumpkin
- Raffia
- Wood Skewers
- Craft Paint
- Pearl Head Pins
- Hot Glue
The basket is one that I bought at my local Goodwill a while ago. I liked the color and the sections of it. When I was sorting through items to use for this project, this basket was the perfect choice. The divided sections made it easier to place the assortment of fall decor pieces inside of it. The handle will be covered once I add all of the fun items to the basket.
I use raffia to fill the basket so that the items wouldn’t sink down too far into the basket.
Before I shopped at the Dollar Tree for some new items, I sorted through my fall craft stash and found pumpkins and scarecrows that I bought there last year. This year I bought mini hay bales, glittery copper pumpkin picks, raffia, and fall floral stems.
I wanted to have different heights for the various items that would go into the basket. I used one of my craft stash pumpkins as a base and a smaller one that I had painted with gold glitter.
- Remove the stems from the pumpkins
- Press the scarecrow floral pick into the center of the small pumpkin.
- Add ribbon to the larger pumpkin. Either pin or glue in place.
- Press the scarecrow pick and small pumpkin into the center of the larger pumpkin.
The hay bales have metal wrapped around them. I didn’t like the look of that, so I covered them with raffia.
- Wrap raffia around the metal on the mini hay bale. Either pin or glue the raffia in place.
- Press the scarecrow and pumpkin pick through the center of the mini hay bale.
The fun part is putting all of the items into the basket, keeping it balanced and giving it a layered look. I adjusted the placement of items until I was happy with how it was looking.
I painted a few small pumpkins blue and orange using Waverly Chalk Paint. To hold them in place I used wood skewers inserted into the bottoms of the pumpkins. I was happy to have found the glittery copper pumpkin picks at the Dollar Tree.
I added in some filler to the back of the basket to help the floral stems stay taller than the other items. A couple more scarecrows were attached to pumpkins and layered in place. More pumpkins were added until the basket was full.
The finishing touch was to add a strip of ribbon around the basket and a wooden pumpkin that I had in my craft stash. These are hot glued in place.
This is a fun fall decor piece for our sun room. I like to use casual and cute decor for this space during fall. I made sure to use colors that would go well with my Tic Tac Toe Game Board.
