Memorial Day is a solemn day of remembrance. It is a time of reflection, of reverence and respect. It is a day recognized by many Americans as a time to give gratitude for the lives that were lost while in service to our country. It is a day to honor the sacrifice made by so many brave and heroic members of our military.
How then, has Memorial Day transformed into a time of beer drinking, revelry, and happy festivities? At what point in time did it become acceptable to say, “Happy Memorial Day?”
Perhaps, it’s time that we reminded ourselves of the solemnity of Memorial Day.
I understand that over time, Memorial Day has become the unofficial start of summer and as such, it is a day that people want to celebrate. I have no problem with three day weekends, fun at the beach or a back yard bbq with friends. I do take issue with how that aspect of Memorial Day seems to have left the true reason for the holiday in the back seat.
I wonder if a child is asked to explain what Memorial Day is all about, if he or she will mention that it’s a day to honor our fallen military service members. I wonder if that is still being taught in schools and if parents are explaining it to their children.
This Memorial Day, I hope that each of us will take the time to reflect and to honor. I hope we will all find some time to express our gratitude for the lives that have been lost in service to our country.
