Make your own set of Hocus Pocus Inspired Halloween Party Signs using thrift store find signs, Cricut, or pre-made vinyl decals letters. For a Halloween block party, we wanted to create lots of decor pieces that relate to one of our favorite movies.

There is always an assortment of plaques and signs at thrift stores and this was a fun way to give them makeovers and it’s budget friendly Halloween decor. This was a great way to put a little dent into the stash of signs that I have.

Supplies Used for Halloween Party Signs
- Assortment of thrift store find signs

- Gray and Black Chalk Paint
- Paint Brushes
- Old Cloth
- Cricut Air Explore 2 and Weeding Tools
- Wood Stakes
- Transfer Paper

- Polycrylic Spray Finish
It’s hard to pass up these signs at my local Goodwill. Usually priced between .99 and $2.99, using them for home decor is an inexpensive way to create one of a kind accent pieces.
For some of the plaques, I used spray paint for a glossy finish. Rust-O-leum makes a good outdoor spray paint and using their spray paint grip saves your fingers from both getting tired and getting messy. For other plaques I gave them a coat of black chalk paint, followed by adding in streaks of gray to give them an aged look. I used an old cloth to blend the gray paint into the black.
Using thrift store signs for Halloween Lawn Decor
- Remove any stickers, dirt, or grime from the signs
- Spray paint the plaques
- Use blended chalk paint for some of the signs
- Spray all of the signs with Polycrylic Protective Finish
- Use a cutting machine or self adhesive decals to decorate the signs
Cricut Design Space has tons of Halloween images, many of them are free, and more are included with my yearly subscription fee. For the phrases, I found fonts that I liked and created my own. You could also use self adhesive vinyl letters and images that can be found online or at craft stores.
Fun Lawn Decor for a Hocus Pocus themed Halloween Party
My favorite sign is the Sanderson Sisters one. This was made using an old Halloween decor piece that we’ve had for years. One side of it is painted with a graveyard design that works for the Hocus Pocus party, so I left it. The back side of the sign was unfinished. I painted it using gray chalk paint and let some of the unfinished wood show through.
Finding ways to de-stash is always great. I’m glad to have had the signs, the paint and vinyl all on hand to make these. They’ll look great along with the other DIY Halloween block party decor that we’ve created.
