This thrift store find flip was a very inexpensive project. Taking an old worn out footstool and giving it a completely new look was easy and didn’t take very long to do. It’s the second Monday of the month and that means it’s time for our monthly blog hop challenge!
This month, along with a group of our blogging friends, we were challenged to create a project from a thrift store find without spending more than $10.

Footstool Makeover with Paint and Fabric
I found this worn out footstool at Goodwill recently. It was priced at $6.99. After looking it over, I decided it was worth buying. The legs were sturdy, so I thought it could be salvaged.
Supplies Used:
Fabric
Measuring Tape
Scissors
Paint
MinWax Protective Spray Finish
Staple Gun
Foam
The fabric was marked down to $1.00 per yard at Walmart. I bought 2 yards of it to make sure I had enough left over to replace the fabric if it begins to look worn. I already had the paint and protective spray finish.
Once I started taking the footstool apart, I realized that it was going to take more than simply recovering it. I knew I would remove the fabric, but I was hoping that I could use the foam.
Sadly, this is what the foam looked like. It’s not something I wanted to keep. So, I made a trip to JoAnns to look for foam.
With a 40% off coupon, I only paid a little over $2.00 for the foam. It was larger than I needed so I had to measure and trim it to fit the wood base of the stool.
I removed the legs and after cleaning them with TSP, I gave them a coat of spray paint.
I used Sea Side green Krylon spray paint. Once they dried, I sprayed them with Minwax Protective Finishing spray.
I tried a few different ways to fold the fabric around the wood, but ultimately, I ended up folding it as I would if wrapping a gift box. The problem with wrapping it all the way around the foam so that I wouldn’t have any folds showing was due to the placement of the screws for the legs.
Once I decided on the best way to get a look that I was happy with, the fabric was stapled in place.
Due to the positioning of the fabric, I had to cut a small slit in the fabric for one of the screws to go through.
I’m pleased with how this footstool makeover with fabric and paint turned out. I would have preferred to have found a way that didn’t show the folds so much, but with the firm foam and the screws needing to go in certain spots, this will have to do!
I often sit in the sun room working on my lap top. Having a spot to place the lap top when not in use is convenient. This footstool is just the right size.
I always enjoy finding items at thrift stores that are in need of simple makeovers to bring them back to life. I was happy to have found a small folding piano stool recently. It was an easy makeover.

Buying a new piece of foam added a little more to the total cost. The new costs for the makeover was just a little over ten dollars, but close enough!

When I saw this adorable stool, I knew it was done by you! It has your signature coastal colors! Simply beautiful, Beverly! I love getting fabric from Walmart! The only other fabric store – Joann has become too expensive since it basically has no competition!
Beverly says
I’m predictable! 🙂 Thank you, Gail! The prices at Joann can be high-I never shop there without a coupon.

Mirrors and footstools You just can;t pass them up for a project. The color of this little guy is very spa like too. He looks good in his new home.

That’s true! And trays. I’ve lost count of the number of thrift store trays I’ve bought. I’ve done several makeovers and still have lots stored away. Thank you, Michelle. I’m happy with how this turned out.

Beverly, I love how your stool turned out. The fabric and newly painted stool legs are very pretty. I’ve run into the same issue when trying to recover a piece and I just end up putting the screws in over the new fabric. Of course, It is harder to find them that way. Your solution is much easier! I use my little footstool the exact same way for my laptop! Pinned and shared.

I was happy when I spotted this stool. It’s just the right size and height for what I wanted to be its purpose. I fought with it for a while before finding a solution for the screws. Thank you and thanks so much for pinning, too.
