Giving a thrift store find metal pumpkin a farmhouse look is a simple project that can be done in minutes! All you’ll need is spray paint and a stem to have an old, worn pumpkin looking fresh and new.
Aside from the low price, the next best thing about thrift store finds to me is how easily they can be changed to fit in with any decor.
Supplies Used for Farmhouse Metal Pumpkin Makeover
- Metal Pumpkin purchased at thrift store
- Spray Paint
- Clear matte sealer spray
- Brown Paper Wrapped Floral Wire
- Hot Glue
I’ve had this metal pumpkin that I bought at Goodwill since last fall. I didn’t get around to giving it a makeover until now. Since Gloria is using lots of farmhouse decor in her new home, this was a perfect piece for a farmhouse makeover.
After cleaning the pumpkin with TSP and making sure it was dry, it got two coats of Rust-Oleum Lenin White Chalked spray paint. I allowed it to dry completely between coats. Once it was dry, it was sprayed with Matte Clear Rust-Oleum Chalked Protective Finish.
The pumpkin was designed to hold a tea light candle, but the spot was just the right size for a stem.
After looking through my craft stash for an appropriately sized stem and not finding one that would work, I decided to make one using a piece of paper wrapped floral wire. I wound the wire around a marker to get it to hold the spiral shape. I slipped it off of the marker and slightly bent it to have more of a stem shape to it.
The spot for a candle was filled with hot glue and the stem was pressed down until it held.
This was such a quick and simple makeover, but the difference in its look is great. It’s easy to change up the look of a thrift store find with paint and embellishments. The white pumpkin will go well with Gloria’s gray and white decor. For now, it’s still at my house, but they are moving into their new place this weekend, so it will have a new home along with the Wine Serving Tray with a Pumpkin Insert I made for her.
