When I’m putting together a seasonal tablescape, the first thing I do is to look for items I have on hand that can be reworked and given new looks. These napkin rings have had a number of different looks over the last few years. This year, they got an easy Americana look.
Easy DIY 4th of July Napkin Rings
Supplies Used to Make Patriotic Napkin Rings
- Set of old napkin rings
- Burlap ribbon
- Red and white ribbon
- Hot glue
- Wood chip stars
- Paint & brushes
I’ve had this set of gold basket weave napkin rings for years. A few years ago, I spray painted them white and added a strip of burlap ribbon. That has served as the base for them for different looks. If you don’t have a set of old napkin rings to use, you can buy inexpensive plastic ones that would be great for this.
I’ve added painted shells for a coastal look one year and I combined coastal and patriotic for a red, white, and blue look last year.
The embellishments I add to the napkin rings can be removed pretty easily. I always use hot glue on them so that I can change the look. After removing the shells from last year, I measured and cut a strip of red and off white ribbon for this year’s look.
I have lots of wood craft stars in my craft stash. I sorted through them until I found four that were the right size for the napkin rings. They are painted with DecoArt Morning Glory acrylic paint and glued onto the ribbon.
How easy was that? Giving a new look to elements for a tablescape from year to year for seasonal decor is a quick, easy, and inexpensive way to have a new look each year. Since I’m going for an old Americana look for this year’s 4th of July decor, these faded blue napkins will work well with the new look rings.
I’m putting the finishing touches together for my 4th of July tablescape and I’m loving how it’s all coming together. I set of goal of spending zero new dollars for this year’s look, and so far I’m sticking to that by giving makeovers to some old pieces and finding new ways to use some items I have on hand.

These are really cute! They could easily be adapted for us Canadians by replacing the star with a maple leaf.
