Making a DIY Santa’s Naughty or Nice Scroll was a fun project put together using supplies I had on hand. It’s a combination of a thrift store find with items from my craft stash. I love having Santa figures throughout our home and this one stands near the family Christmas tree. Adding a scroll for him to hold adds a little folly to him.
I had this post planned for the monthly Craft Room De-stash challenge, but with all of the Christmas events going on, the challenge for December has been cancelled. I’m sharing it as a craft de-stash because for this project, everything I used was found in my craft room.
Supplies Used for Santa’s Naughty or Nice Scroll
- Wood Craft Rolling Pin
- Ridged Felt
- Adhesive Letters
- Hot Glue
- Wood Dowel (not in photo)
I found this small rolling pin at my local Goodwill a while ago. It’s been in my craft stash for over a year. I knew when I bought it that I wanted to use it to make a Santa’s List Scroll, but it was one of those ideas that never made it to life, until now. It’s about 8 inches long, so it’s a good size for the 3 foot Santa to hold.
I cut a piece of ridged felt to fit the rolling pin’s width and hot glued it in place, allowing excess felt to mimic the paper for the list. I cut the felt to hang about 6 inches.
I searched through my stash of ribbon to find some that was both the right width and in Christmas colors. I ran a line of hot glue down the side edge of the felt and glued the ribbon to it on each side.
Next, the scroll was flipped over and a small wooden dowel was added to the bottom. I curled the bottom of the felt to around the dowel and glued it in place. I used wire cutters to trim off the excess wood.
Using the same ribbon, I tied a simple bow onto each side of the handle.
On the back of the scroll, I hot glued a ribbon loop to give it a way to be held by the Santa figure.
At first, I thought I would use some self adhesive craft letters for the words on the scroll, since I wanted to use what I had. But, I found that I didn’t have the letters in the same font to spell out Naughty or Nice. I placed some in different fonts here to show you how it could look with self adhesive craft letters if you don’t have a die cutting machine.
I removed the craft letters and used my Cricut to cut vinyl letters for the scroll. The vinyl adheres well to the fuzzy felt.
This Santa figure stands near our family tree and I love how the scroll adds a touch of whimsy to him. If you have small children, it would be fun to place their names on the scroll instead.
