I wanted to dress up our lawn this summer with some simple patriotic decor. I love the look of small flags lining a yard, but I didn’t want to go with the traditional look of mini US flags. Making my own using patriotic fabric, wood dowels, and glue was an easy way to get a unique look for our lawn.

I’ve wanted to make a set of small patriotic lawn flags for a couple of years, but didn’t put it on my to do list until this year. I had pinned several fabric banners that I thought could be changed up to make into flags. This Stars & Stripes Bunting from Old Time Pottery had the look I wanted. Instead of attaching the fabric to a string, mine are attached to wood dowels.
Supplies Used to Make Patriotic Lawn Decor Flags
- Assorted patriotic fabric
- Wood dowels
- Hot Glue
- Ribbon
- Scissors
Steps for making patriotic lawn flags
- Cut fabric into a rectangles. Mine are 12″ x 3.5″
- Fold in half lengthwise to find center
- Run a line of hot glue along crease
- Place wood dowel on glue
- Add another line of glue to dowel
- Roll fabric over dowel
- Add glue to fabric and fold the top portion down to meet the back
- Trim stray threads as needed
- Cut two strips of ribbon the length of the flag, doubled
- Glue ribbon onto top and bottom of flag
- Cut a strip of ribbon for the end of the flag
- Glue the ribbon in place and turn it over and glue to the back of the flag
The finishing touch is to add a couple of simple bows to the top and and bottom of the flag. These are glued in place over the corners of the fabric.
A set of twelve of these can be made in under an hour. I love simple crafts that don’t take long at all to make.
Decorating your lawn with no sew flags that you’ve made yourself is an easy way to have add a festive look that will be one of a kind for your neighborhood.

These flags stand really well! What a fun idea. Where my family lives in NJ, they do a really big parade and celebration for 4th of July (I try my best to go every year). I could see making these, and handing them out during the parade, or to decorate around the house for afterwards.

patriotic flags like this are really not a thing here in the UK except when there is a big football match but that doesn’t stop me thinking they are really sweet.
They look really simple to put together.

I like this idea and I can use my fabric stash. I can see doing this for other holidays too. Pinned.
