DIY Coastal Mantel Decor is a great way to showcase your love of all things coastal. In between seasonal decor, I use my mantel and fireplace to display some of my favorite coastal pieces. I also love to change it up with new pieces that I’ve made. This wooden plaque with a fun coastal quote is my latest Cricut project.
I found a decorative plaque at my local Goodwill a few months ago. It was painted dark blue and had a flag image painted on it. I liked the size of it and the price of $1.99. Apparently, I’ve deleted the photos I took of it.
I cleaned it off and used Rust-Oleum Chalked Paint in Serenity Blue spray paint to give it a look that matches my coastal decor. This was the first time I had tried this particular paint and I was pleased with the smooth, chalky finish it gave the wood. I’ll definitely be using it again.
While it was drying, I spent some time looking for a quote that had something to do with the beach, shells, the ocean, the coast. Needless to say there are hundreds of such quotes. I narrowed my search and found the quote “Not all stars belong to the sky.” Perfect!
I have a stash of starfish in my craft supplies that I knew would be the right size for this project. Plus, they were already colorful, so no need to repaint them.
I used Cricut Design Space to find some fun starfish. I sized them and cut out a couple of different designs.
I’ve found that weeding out small pieces of vinyl can be tricky. I had to do the one with the holes in it twice before I got it right. I used fonts and sizes for the quote that would fit well on the wood plaque.
Once I had the words and the starfish ready to be transferred to the wood, I decided on the placement. I tried several different placements until I found the one I liked most.
I used my palm sander to give the wood more of a distressed look along the edges.
Adding the craft starfish was the final step. These are glued in place using E6000 glue.
I’m enjoying how it looks on our mantel along with some other coastal pieces.
I’m still practicing with my Cricut and learning! Hopefully soon, I’ll have it down well enough to share the particulars of how I used Design Space to create projects.
