As the weather warms up, I like to add some new simple beach pieces to my decor. This DIY Beach Decor vase didn’t take long at all to put together. I added some color to it to have it match my sunroom decor and other coastal decor in the room.
This project was one that Gloria started. She purchased all of the items at Michaels. She had planned on putting it together for me as a gift last year. She put it aside for a while and apparently forgot about it. Recently, I saw it at her place and asked about it. I knew it wasn’t something she was making for her place because she doesn’t have coastal decor. She told me it was supposed to be a gift for me, but she needed some other pieces for it. Rather than leave it to languish at her place, I offered to bring it home as is and finish putting it together.
Supplies Used:
Large Glass Cylinder Vase
Craft Sand
Raffia
Sea Shells
Sea Glass
Hot Glue
This is how it looked when I brought it home.
I emptied the vase down to the sand and added a layer of shells.
To give it some color, I tore some raffia into small pieces and sprinkled it on top of the shells.
Adding some shards of sea glass gave it a fun pop of coastal colors.
I topped it off with another layer of sea shells. Most of these on the top layer came from Folly Beach, a local Charleston beach.
I wrapped several pieces of raffia ribbon around the outside of the vase and tied the pieces off into a bow. To keep the raffia secured to the vase I added a small dot of hot glue on the back side of the vase. The final touch was to add a starfish just beneath the bow. It’s also hot glued in place.
Using a real candle would lead to dripping wax onto the shells, so to avoid that, I’m using a LED pillar candle in the center of the vase.

To save on costs, most dollar stores have a selection of large vases, shells, raffia ribbon and vase filler sand that you could buy and keep the total cost low. If I had purchased the items to make this, you can be sure that’s where I would have bought them!
