Coastal Vanity Box ~ Thrift Store Find Makeover. I’ve been lucky lately to have found some thrift store items that are just right for makeovers. I wanted to add a little more coastal decor to our guest bath and I was looking for a small box that could be used as a vanity box with a few items that our guests might need. I found a box that was just the right size. It just needed a makeover to fit in with the decor.
It was a pretty sad looking box with lots of dings and scratches. But, it was solid and sturdy, so I knew I could make it work.
The painted flower on top was done with some texture to it. I gently sanded it, but it still had a little texture.
The inside of the box was in better shape than the outside. It just needed some cleaning. I used TSP to clean the box before painting.
I painted it using Waverly Chalk Paint in Celery.
Even though the inside didn’t look bad, I decided to line it with a couple of pieces of canvas. I used fabric glue to hold it in place.
Using a starfish stencil, I painted the center of the top of the box. I added some white chalk paint to the celery paint to get a blended look. I painted thicker lines to try to cover up the leftover texture from the flower. I used E6000 glue to add a small shell to the top.
I filled it with a small tube of toothpaste, some cotton swabs, and a couple of small lotions.
Our guest bath has a nautical look and this coastal vanity box fits in well. I love this anchor wall hanging that I found at At Home a few months ago.
Getting the look for less is always a win to me. The box was less than $2.00 at my local Goodwill Store and it only took a little paint.
Sometimes, it’s easy to walk right by items that look as rough as this box looked, but I always have my eye on items that just need a little makeover to bring them back to life.
