Since I don’t have little ones at home, I don’t usually have a Christmas Countdown or an advent calendar with hidden treats, but when I found an item at Goodwill recently that was a “Countdown to Everything” I knew it needed a Christmas makeover. Using a few items, it got a new look and will be a cute counter top display this season.
This was still in its original packaging when I spotted it. With a price sticker of $22.95 I would never have purchased it. Goodwill had it priced at $4.94-that’s more like it!
After taking all of the pieces out, I decided to use red chalk paint and a gold paint pen for the makeover.
I taped off the parts that I didn’t want to paint and gave the top and the bottom two coats of Waverly Chalk Paint in Crimson.
The distressed white looks great with the deep red, so I didn’t need to paint that part. I painted each of the numbered squares with the same red paint. This took three coats to cover the numbers.
I wrote the numbers on the squares using a gold paint pen. A couple of small gold trees with adhesive backs were added.
For the larger square, I tried a few different ideas. Going through my Christmas craft stash, I found some Santa tags. It already had a hole punched it to hold ribbon. It fit just right onto the peg.
The final step was to add the glittery adhesive word “Christmas” to the bottom of the square. This came from a package of Christmas sayings that I purchased last year on clearance at Michaels right after Christmas.
I love the new look for the countdown and the total new cost for this simple makeover was the purchase price of the item at Goodwill. There’s always something that is need of a makeover at thrift stores. Don’t pass them by without thinking of how you could change the look!
