Sometimes I just want a quick sweet treat that is easy to make and doesn’t have lots of ingredients. I also love a good cake mix hack. This recipe meets all of those wants.
Cake Mix Chocolate Chip Cookie Squares
It’s time for this month’s Pinterest Challenge hosted by Erlene from My Pinterventures. This is always a fun blog hop with tons of great ideas and loads of creativity shared! It’s great to find a pin and give it your own spin.
When I saw this pin for Lazy Chocolate Chip Cookie Bars from Smart School House, I knew I wanted to give them a try.
When a recipe only calls for four ingredients, it gets my attention! A cake mix, eggs, butter, and chocolate morsels are all that’s needed to make these chocolate chip cookie squares.
After melting the butter, all of the ingredients are mixed together in one bowl. That’s great for clean up! The dough is pressed into a baking pan. The original recipe didn’t specify what size pan. I used a 9×9″ pan. When I make these again, I’ll use a larger baking pan. These turned out a little too thick.
After baking, I decided to top the cookie with frosting. If I had wanted to spend more time on these I would have use the cream cheese frosting that I use for lots of my cakes. Since I was going for quick and easy, I opted for ready made cream cheese frosting.
Since that frosting is very sweet, I just coated the top with a thin layer of frosting.
I also used a vanilla cake mix instead of the yellow cake mix in the original recipe. While these were thicker than the recipe that inspired them, they were tasty. Using a larger pan will give more of cookie bar thickness than these had. The smaller pan makes them more cake like.

Cake Mix Chocolate Chip Cookie Squares
A delicious cake mix hack using on 4 ingredients
Ingredients
- 1/2 Cup Butter (melted)
- 1 Box Vanilla Cake Mix
- 2 Eggs
- 12 oz Semi Sweet Chocolate Morsels
- 1/2 cup Cream Cheese Frosting
Instructions
-
Pre-heat oven to 350
-
Melt butter
-
Lightly beat two eggs with a whisk and pour melted butter into bowl. Whisk to combine.
-
Add in the cake mix and mix with a large spoon to combine.
-
Add the bag of chocolate morsels to mixture and stir to incorporate into mixture.
-
Spray pan with cooking spray and press mixture into pan.
-
Bake for 25 minutes. Check for doneness. Continue baking if needed for 5 more minutes.
-
Remove from oven and allow to cool completely before adding frosting.
We liked these well enough to try again, but as I mentioned, I would use a larger pan to have thinner squares. They are definitely quick and easy!

I made up a huge jar of “cake mix” a few months back. We just scoop it out anytime we want to use cake mix for things like this… I’m thinking I need to tell my daughter to make me some of these pronto! She’s taken over baking in our house! Pinning
